Chairman’s Ramblings

Some more problems Saturday with one of the star players in the Premier. We MUST get hold of the dozen or so who are spoiling it for us all. I said in a meeting last week if a star player gets reported most clubs will use every trick in the book, aqnd some not in the book, to get him off. Thats a FACT. Until clubs realise their responsibility we are losing the battle but we will NOT lose the war.

Chairman’s Ramblings

Terrific day umpiring Sheffield United v Hallam. A sheer joy as the game was played in the most wonderful spirit. My colleague, newcomer Mark Rush, in only his 7th game shows great potential. Few very minor flaws that can easily sorted and will be as he is prepared to take on board advice.
Off later with Peter Mac, Wardy and a bloke from Halifax league to do some assessing at Linthwaite just other side of Huddersfield.
I can then sign all 3 off as qualified Level 2 assessors as they have done the classroom theory.

Chairman’s Ramblings

Went to Bawtry Road yesterday to meet up with some mates and watch 2X 20/20 matches between Durham Academy and English Uni. Scorer was a mate from Geordy Land, a Level 3 assessor. He was impressed with Wardy, the other one from Cheshire Premier league looked good bar for the habit of crouching right down when bowling end umpire. Been wearing a trilby he would have been just like one you see in Test matches from the 50s.
I was amazed he had reached such dizzy hieghts as a Premier League.
I pointed out this glaring fault, along with the excellent stuff he did with little hope of him changing as old habbits die hard.
He wentt out for the second game, stood upright and hey presto NO Head Movement. It fair made my day.
A phone call then from Glyn Pearson who had invited at shortish notice Shaun Beer to stand in a friendly between Bradford and Leeds Uni and a Yorkshire 2nd X1.
Glyn was quite impressed.
all this proves we are doing things right in SY but are still getting yobbish behaviour from the idiot element. This is NOT helping one iota and it MUST be stopped.

Did photo shoot at Phoenix with Wardy and Gareth Davis re balls we give to junior cricket. Lesroy, who is boss man of Barnsley Joe Lunb could not make it due to work commitments. Pity as been nice to see him and Gareth on same field and not argueing. perhaps another time.
Then last night along with Tong, Wardy and Mick Frith met Whiston officials re one of our umpres packing in. Tong said if procedure had been followed it would have been a harsh punishment for the club. Upshot is club chairman and Wilso are to read riot act to team to be good lads. My view is old habbits die hard but time will tell. Lets hope umpires do the job as they ought.
Am very disapointed to have lost Paul Reeve who could have gone on to better things. Perhaps (and I hope) he wil have a re-think. It does show that when the trouble starts it has to be nipped in the budd immeadiatly. Otherwise it just goes on and on and bloody on. A gentle word, or harsh one if needed and 5 penalty runs generally does the trick. I beat on and on about this but umpires on the whole just nesh out.

Chairman’s Ramblings

Level 2 assessement at Golcar yesterday, no chat with captains at toss, no thanks to scorers at end of game and in between only just above average technique from the bloke being assessed. I realise as I travel round the county on this job we have the best trained umpires down in SY. FACT.
Thats why I am spitting bloody feathers when earleir I learn one of our respected and promising umpires has resigned due to yobbish behaviour from players and spectaters. I, along with others, are giving up time travelling up and down the county on courses so we can make our umpires better.
Some revolutionary plans to stamp this out may well be implemented. Imagine a strike by umpires in Premier games. I could run a sweepstake on how long it would be b4 the fighting started if no umpires present. I would guess 15 minutes at the maximum.

Chairman’s Ramblings

Done 4 appointments for Kingfisher National KO. Baggy and Trentham at Sheffield United and Sayles and Knocker Knowles at Whitley. Busy weekend as at Thorncliffe Sat and Level 2assessing at Golcar Sunday. Taking Tony Keyworth and hopefully passing him as level 2 assessor.

Chairman’s Ramblings

Stood with Paul Hays at Wath yesterday in a university game, did a Level 1A assessment and found very little wrong.Good standard of play from both Sheffield and Liverpool.
Got in a lousy position to judge a run out then a mistake calling no ball to a waist high full toss that was not one. Would have been hell on in the league but the uni lads just accept it and get on with the game. IF ONLY.
